6D.Tiny Earth
Inspiring Future Scientists to Tackle Global Health Challenges
6D.Tiny Earth is a collaborative effort aimed at inspiring students to pursue scientific careers while addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time—the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. Through this initiative, students engage in real-world research by discovering antibiotics from soil bacteria, often from their local surroundings.
Tiny Earth
Tiny Earth is a global research and education initiative founded by Dr. Jo Handelsman, Vilas Research Professor of Plant Pathology and Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The mission of Tiny Earth is to tackle the critical issue of antibiotic resistance by involving students in the discovery of new antibiotics from soil bacteria.
By offering hands-on research opportunities, Tiny Earth inspires students to pursue STEM careers while contributing to global efforts in scientific discovery.
With over 800 instructors in 30 countries, Tiny Earth fosters a community of educators and students who are actively engaged in addressing one of the world’s most pressing health challenges.
6D.Tiny Earth Partner Instructor (6D.TEPI)
This program is a training and certification program within the 6D.SRI Series. It is designed to certify and equip educators with the skills, resources, and mentorship necessary to lead Tiny Earth research courses. The program focuses on teaching educators how to guide students through the discovery of antibiotics from soil bacteria, contributing to global health research.
This program empowers instructors to lead impactful research-based education that addresses real-world challenges, such as antibiotic resistance.
